What is Person-Centred Counselling and How Does It Work?
At the heart of Person-Centred Counselling lies a simple yet powerful concept: everyone has the inner resources needed for growth, healing and change. Developed by psychologist Carl Rogers in the mid-20th century, this approach is rooted in the conviction that when we are offered the conditions of empathy, acceptance, and authenticity we naturally evolve and heal.
A Relationship Built on Trust
Person-Centred Counselling is not about giving advice or fixing problems. Instead, it’s about creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace and in your own way. As your counsellor, I will offer you genuine warmth, deep respect, and an open mind—just as you are, without expectation or judgment.
The Core Conditions
Carl Rogers identified three ‘core conditions’ that support personal growth and emotional healing which my training and experience have helped me to cultivate:
- Empathy – I will strive to understand your world from your perspective, walking beside you in your experience with care and compassion.
- Unconditional Positive Regard – You will be accepted fully, without judgment, helping to foster self-acceptance and emotional safety. My practice is based on a radical process of acceptance.
- Congruence (Genuineness) – I will be real and transparent with you, using my expertise to support you but never hiding behind a professional mask.
These conditions are not techniques—they’re ways of being. And together, they create the kind of environment for lasting change and growth.
You Are the Expert on You
In Person-Centred Counselling, you lead the way. You choose what to talk about, and we work at a pace set by you. I won’t impose interpretations or solutions, but I will walk alongside you, helping you explore what matters most and gently supporting you in reconnecting with your own inner wisdom.
This approach can be helpful with many different inner struggles:
- Anxiety, stress, or overwhelm
- Depression or low self-esteem
- Grief and loss
- Relationship difficulties
- Life transitions or identity questions
- A general sense of feeling stuck or disconnected
The Power of Being Truly Heard
One of the most healing experiences we can have is simply to be heard. Many clients say they have never had the chance to speak freely, without interruption or judgment. In Person-Centred Counselling, you are given that space—where your story matters, your feelings are valid, and your voice can emerge clearly and confidently.
